Reframe

While Reframe's current onboarding is comprehensive, users frequently complain that it can feel lengthy and impersonal, and even quit half way. My redesign reduces the onboarding experience from approximately 15 to 4 minutes by focusing on the essential information needed to personalize each user's journey. Rather than presenting users with a long questionnaire, I reimagined the experience as a conversation.

Problem

Reframe is a neuroscience-based, alcohol reduction program. The current onboarding is presented in 7 sections, with a total of 53 screens. While comprehensive, it takes around 15 to 20 minutes for users to complete the questionnaire before having access to the paywall information.

Solution

01. A Conversational Experience

Reimagining onboarding as a conversation with Reframe's guide, Brainy.

Screen recording Brainy Brainy

Brainy showcases a range of emotions as he converses with users.

Brainy engages in active listening as he asks questions, while balancing the clinical tone with humanness / friendliness.

02. Gradual Onboarding

Reducing cognitive load by distributing questions on 1) psychological well-being, 2) physical well-being, and 3) mindset to gradual onboarding.

03. Emotional Hook

Before collecting any informatioj, I invited users to imagine themselves, 180 days from now, transforming their relationship with alcohol completely.

Primary Research

Due to the quick turnaround time, I resorted to online reviews on Apple Store and Google Play. Users frequently express frustration of only seeing the paywall information after spending 20 minutes completing a long questionnaire.

Takeaway

If I had more time, I'd implement gradual onboarding (which Reframe already does) thoroughly. For example, questions about user mindset support system could appear as a short, conversational check-in the first time they visit the Community tab.
